WHY THE AGITATION FOR YORUBA NATION...

I never knew it was an interview; I had thought it was one of those “reactions” that reporters seek from members of the audience or those they think can help them flesh up or throw some insights into a story line they are pursuing – and I have done this on a couple of occasions for The Guardian reporter, Kehinde Olatunji. So I was pleasantly surprised when the last outing turned out as a full-blown interview on the very important topic of the agitation for a Yoruba nation. Titled “Our agitation is for a restructured Nigeria, not Yoruba President, says Bolawole” and published in the Tuesday, 31st January, 2023 edition of The Guardian newspaper at page 14, I felt that the views I expressed in the interview should also be shared with my readers. To all intents and purposes, elections have come and gone and the next thing now is governance. In between both, however, is composing the government. If square pegs are put in square holes, the government has a chance of succeeding but in the event that the contrary is the case, then, consider the government to have failed ab initio. The star prize of the last election was the presidency, which was carted away by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; so it is not a surprise that all eyes would be on him as to what colour or shape his government would take. Some have called for a government of national unity, meaning that members of his government should not be restricted to his political party alone or to those who voted for him in the election. Indeed, a unity government properly so-called should include professionals and technocrats who may not be politicians and who, indeed, may not have voted or shown any keen interest in partisan politics. Bringing on board opponents who stood against the president-elect in the election and or their supporters is also to be expected in a government of national unity. All manner of balancing will have to be done – regional, ethnic, religious, gender, age demography, name it. Power brokers and influencers, gods and cabals that must be pacified or unhinged are many of the permutations that must come into play in the formation of a unity government.

The allegations – or do we call them the road to prosperity – that human rights activist and legal luminary, Comrade Femi Falana, has forcefully pushed into the public domain in the past one or two weeks are too weighty to be ignored by the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration. It is like you have a problem and someone says not just that “I have a solution” but “this is the solution!” You either try his solution or tell us why his touted solution is not the solution. Falana’s argument is that subsidy should first be withdrawn from the rich; that if and when this is done, there will be more than enough funds in the kitty to fund government activities and there would be no need to inflict more pain on the long-suffering Nigerian masses who are the ones always being called upon to tighten their belt. Falana also posits that there is so much corruption and wastages allowed the rich and powerful; that if the leakages in the system are plugged and the low-hanging fruits, which he enumerated, are brought into the basket by the government with little or no effort - except the political will and honesty of purpose to act against the concerned members of the ruling class - then, there will be no need to multiply the misery and sorrow of hapless Nigerians.

You can’t believe this, but it is the truth, uncomfortable and damning as it is: Since the return to civilian rule in 1999 (many argue we yet do not have democracy properly so-called), the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) has embarked on strike actions totalling over 57 months - almost five years lost by students and their parents especially to strike actions, since the lecturers and other university workers always return to hold government by the jugular and get paid for work not done!
