• WHY ZIK JOINED OGBONI CULT IN LAGOS

    By Emeka Obasi

Lagos is too sophisticated for any group of individuals to divide along ethnic lines. Politicians are also tricksters, so the drums of war will not achieve anything at the end. The uninformed should learn from the experience of Dr.Nnamdi Azikiwe.

  • Wike Vs Secondus: PDP CHAIRMAN'S MEDIA OFFICE DEBUNKS REPORT OF DISAGREEMENT

    * Describes It As Fallacy, Says APC Real Headache

    By Celestine Okafor (Editor-in-Chief) @CeleOkaf11

The media office of the National Chairman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has debunked a report in Thisday newspaper on Sunday which published in its political notes column with the above headline, insinuating that there was a disagreement within the party between its chairman, Prince Uche Secondus and the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike.

  • WIKE WINS AS PDP EATS THE HUMBLE PIE!

    By Bolanle Bolawole

"Does it then mean that the PDP is out of the woods? Not really! Party leaders still have to contend with the problem of how to reintegrate Wike into the party or effectively manage the maverick politician, if I may call it that! How will the party cure him of what many party faithful see as his anti-party activities? Will he still remain in the Bola Ahmed Tinubu/APC administration or will he be expected to quit?"

  • WIKE'S 'ME ME' AGENDA BACKFIRES, FREES FUBARA?

    By Ikeddy Isiguzo

Nyesom Wike under-rates the purpose of power because he cannot understand it. He is too far gone succeeding without qualms and minimal scruples that he is another great example of how personal quests would increase distractions in Nigeria's nebulous journey to nationhood.

  • WILL BOLA TINUBU MAKE A VINDICTIVE PRESIDENT?

    By Bolanle Bolawole

To all intents and purposes, elections have come and gone and the next thing now is governance. In between both, however, is composing the government. If square pegs are put in square holes, the government has a chance of succeeding but in the event that the contrary is the case, then, consider the government to have failed ab initio. The star prize of the last election was the presidency, which was carted away by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; so it is not a surprise that all eyes would be on him as to what colour or shape his government would take. Some have called for a government of national unity, meaning that members of his government should not be restricted to his political party alone or to those who voted for him in the election. Indeed, a unity government properly so-called should include professionals and technocrats who may not be politicians and who, indeed, may not have voted or shown any keen interest in partisan politics. Bringing on board opponents who stood against the president-elect in the election and or their supporters is also to be expected in a government of national unity. All manner of balancing will have to be done – regional, ethnic, religious, gender, age demography, name it. Power brokers and influencers, gods and cabals that must be pacified or unhinged are many of the permutations that must come into play in the formation of a unity government.

  • WILL FALANA'S LOW-HANGING FRUITS INTEREST TINUBU?

    By Bola Bolawole

The allegations – or do we call them the road to prosperity – that human rights activist and legal luminary, Comrade Femi Falana, has forcefully pushed into the public domain in the past one or two weeks are too weighty to be ignored by the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration. It is like you have a problem and someone says not just that “I have a solution” but “this is the solution!” You either try his solution or tell us why his touted solution is not the solution. Falana’s argument is that subsidy should first be withdrawn from the rich; that if and when this is done, there will be more than enough funds in the kitty to fund government activities and there would be no need to inflict more pain on the long-suffering Nigerian masses who are the ones always being called upon to tighten their belt. Falana also posits that there is so much corruption and wastages allowed the rich and powerful; that if the leakages in the system are plugged and the low-hanging fruits, which he enumerated, are brought into the basket by the government with little or no effort - except the political will and honesty of purpose to act against the concerned members of the ruling class - then, there will be no need to multiply the misery and sorrow of hapless Nigerians.

  • WILL GHANAIAN PRESIDENT SURVIVE THIS STORM?

    By Azu Ishiekwene

Not so long ago, he was the poster boy of what looked like an African renaissance. Ghana’s President Akufo-Addo didn’t only know what to say, he also knew when and how. I still remember 2018. Barely one year after Akufo-Addo was inaugurated, he was on the big stage.

  • WILL MACHINES REPLACE JOURNALISTS, TOO?

    By Azu Ishiekwene

The advent of any significant changes in technology has often triggered concerns about the fate of journalism. Even at the infancy of social media, TIME covered one of its editions of February 5, 2009, with concern about the imminent death of journalism. To drive home the point, the graphic was illustrated with a copy of the New York Times wrapping a tilapia.

  • WILL THE FG-ASUU AGREEMENT END STRIKES IN OUR UNIVERSITIES (2)?

    By Bolanle Bolawole

In the first instalment last week, the response to the question whether the new FG-ASUU agreement will end strikes in our universities was ambivalent. “Yes” to some but “No” to others. “Yes” if the agreement is seen as a means to an end and not an end in itself. If it is seen as the first step that begins a journey of 1000 years, as a Chinese proverb puts it, because the task of rescuing our university system from the depth into which it has fallen will take more than the signing of an agreement to accomplish.

  • WILL THE FG-ASUU AGREEMENT END STRIKES IN OUR UNIVERSITIES? (1)

    By Bolanle Bolawole

You can’t believe this, but it is the truth, uncomfortable and damning as it is: Since the return to civilian rule in 1999 (many argue we yet do not have democracy properly so-called), the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) has embarked on strike actions totalling over 57 months - almost five years lost by students and their parents especially to strike actions, since the lecturers and other university workers always return to hold government by the jugular and get paid for work not done!

  • WILL TINUBU'S NATIONWIDE BROADCAST STAVE OFF BREWING TROUBLE? (1)

    By Bola Bolawole

The “honeymoon” enjoyed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is over – two months into the life of his administration, which has a lifespan of four years (48 months) in the first instance. While he is yet to fully form his government, Tinubu is already fighting fires on many fronts; his problems, unfortunately, are majorly self-inflicted. His “subsidy is gone” bombshell is one while the floating of the Naira is another, two nagging issues that the president tried to address in his first nationwide broadcast last Monday. Only a few misguided elements - the major beneficiaries of the bottomless pit of corruption called fuel subsidy and political partisans still sulking and bellyaching about Tinubu’s emergence as president - will fail to reason with the superior argument for the removal of subsidy as it was operated by the Muhammadu Buhari administration. Tinubu, however, erred in the way he went about the removal.

A good number of those I have spoken with since the news of her tragic death broke on Friday night, said Nigerian gospel artiste, Osinachi Nwachukwu, 42, should not have died. She was such a tremendous gift to millions of people and inspired even millions more through her songs, yet she had not even reached the peak of her potential.
