Dolphin Maria International School, Bauchi, has emerged winner of the 2026 11th edition of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) National Quiz Competition for Senior Secondary Schools on Legislation and Democracy.

Dolphin Maria narrowly emerged victorious after a keenly contested final against Government Girls Arabic College, Alkaleri. Both schools initially tied with 35 points each, forcing a re-run. In the decisive re-run, Dolphin Maria secured 45 points to edge GGAC Alkaleri, which scored 40 points.

Government Girls Arabic College, Alkaleri, came second, while Government Day Secondary School, Dagu, in Warji Local Government Area, secured the third position.

The competition, which featured six secondary schools from across Bauchi State, was organised to deepen students' understanding of legislation, democracy and governance.

Speaking at the event in Bauchi on Tuesday, the Bauchi State Commissioner for Education, Abdulkadir Mohammed Ibrahim, said civic education remained essential to preparing young Nigerians for responsible participation in democratic governance.

The commissioner, represented by the Director of Quality Assurance, Hassan Sulaiman, urged the participating students to remain focused and see the competition as an opportunity to broaden their knowledge.

He said the knowledge acquired through the exercise was more important than winning or losing, urging the students to answer the questions carefully and represent their schools effectively.

The Director-General of NILDS, represented by Engr. Adamu Yahaya Abdulhamid, said the competition had entered its 11th year and was designed to promote awareness of the legislature, democracy and governance among secondary school students.

He said civic education could help address political apathy, misinformation and intolerance by equipping young people with relevant knowledge and critical-thinking skills.

The winners received cash prizes of ₦70,000, ₦50,000 and ₦20,000 for the first, second and third positions respectively.

The six participating schools were Dolphin Maria International School, Bauchi; Government Day Secondary School, Dagu; Government Day Secondary School, Dagauda; Government Day Secondary School, Madara; Government Girls Arabic College, Alkaleri; and Iqamatun Sunnah, Gamawa. NNL.
