Grassroots advocates from across Bauchi State have received specialized training on using community theatre, storytelling and dialogue to tackle gender-based violence (GBV), child marriage and other harmful traditional practices.

The training, organised by the Girl Child Value Support Initiative under its Zabin Rayuwa project, attracted fellows from all Local Government Areas to strengthen community-led advocacy across Northern Nigeria.

Addressing participants, Executive Director Precious Samson Wakili said the programme recognizes that meaningful social transformation is best achieved when trusted community members lead conversations on sensitive issues.

She explained that the fellows would use creative communication methods, including theatre, radio advocacy and storytelling, to engage local communities in challenging harmful norms while promoting girls' rights.

Wakili said the initiative would work closely with parents, religious leaders, traditional institutions, women and youth groups to build community ownership of the campaign.

In his presentation, Creative Director Jacob Oluwaferanmi outlined ethical standards for storytelling, stressing confidentiality, informed consent and dignity in portraying survivors' experiences.

Communication expert Hyeladzira Maryam Adamu said community theatre provides a safe platform for discussing sensitive issues, encouraging empathy and inspiring communities to identify and implement lasting solutions to gender-based violence and child marriage. NNL.
