One year ago, on November 15, 2023, the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) invited me to speak on “Nigerian Media, Sustainability and Existential Threats by Big Tech.” Being asked again this year is a privilege, but I won’t be surprised if this is my last invitation.

I understand wealthy US citizens and conservatives of the evangelical hue rooting for Donald Trump. The rich believe he would loosen regulations and protect them and their businesses from excessive taxation. Conservative evangelicals believe he is the bulwark against wokeism, especially the ultra-liberal variety. And white folks want their country back.

The indescribable destruction caused by the first and second world wars led many to desire an international organization dedicated to maintaining world peace. The United Nations (UN) was therefore established on 24 October 1945, to maintain international peace and security and to achieve cooperation among nations on economic, social, and humanitarian challenges.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu cherishes opportunities to maximise his minimalistion of some parts of Nigeria. In tweaking his cabinet, he extended his disdain for the South East to the oil producing Niger Delta. He knows what he did. Scrapping the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs could not have been to reduce "cost of governance" when in the same breath he set up a Ministry of Liverstock Development, and employed seven new Ministers in place of five he sacked.

Minutes after we rendered the last stanza of the national anthem with impressive passion, the lyrics put us to immediate judgement as the tales of woes that were painted had deep strokes that held their hues. Silence descended on the hall, making the voices on the devastations of oil and gas exploration - maybe, exploitation is better - in the Niger Delta, more eerie.

Those who created the T-Pain label for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must be grinning from ear-to-ear for the phenomenal success they have recorded! Not that they said anything new or that Nigerians were not familiar with the phenomenon they graphically painted but because the Tinubu government allowed it to get under its skin. When you respond to certain attacks, you give it traction. There are occasions when silence is golden!

Professor Godini Gabriel Darah (GG Darah or simply “Comrade”, as we fondly called him) was one of our fire-spitting Marxist lecturers and staff advisers at the then University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile-Ife aka “Great Ife”. Respect, sir! But how “great” is “Great Ife” today when it does not even rank among the top 10 universities in the country? It seemeth the university authorities have been sleeping and snoring, living in past glory! OAU has repeatedly failed, year-in, year-out, to measure up among the country’s first-tier universities. What’s the matter is, however, a topic for another day!

Several people, including Nigerian leaders, have said that democracy, as a form of government, has no better alternative. And why not, if democracy is all about a system of government in which the governed freely participate in electing their representatives?

WE THOUGHT BUHARI HATED IGBO: Ndigbo believed the immediate past president, Muhammadu Buhari hated them. He did. He does. As number one, he showed it; he proved it and he virtually said it with such Freudian slips like, “dot in a circle,” language they understand and “ 97% to 5%.” Buhari, like the average Fulani, does hide his feelings. Igbo knew/knows that there’s no love lost between them and Buhari. President Buhari showed Igbo hot pepper over two terms or eight years.

On Tuesday, November 5, 2024, the world's longest and most consequential experiment in democracy will face another monumental test. Will the United States of America elect it's first female president and commander-in-chief, or will a majority of the people return to the white nationalist DNA of the American experience?

Dear former First Lady,

You asked the question that millions outside the US have been asking for weeks if not months: Why can’t America see former President Donald Trump for who he is – a congenital liar, a narcissist, a fascist, and a demagogue?
