As I set out to pen this piece on this serene Sunday afternoon, my mind is drawn to the profound epistle of Apostle Paul to the Corinthians in 1 Corinthians 1:27-29: "But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; and base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence."

In a bold move to tackle corruption and ensure accountability, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has taken decisive action against the 18 Local Government Area (LGA) chairmen accused of mismanaging resources. The governor's intervention has been widely commended by well-meaning Nigerians, who see this as a step in the right direction towards transparency and good governance.

In 1984 there was a universal review of the dystopian novel Nineteen Eight- Four, sometimes written and published as 1984, written by George Orwell. More known for his satirical book Animal Farm, George Orwell is a pen name adopted by Eric Arthur Blair, an English novelist, poet, essayist, journalist and critic. According to Wikipedia, “his work is characterised by lucid prose, social criticism, opposition to all totalitarianism, and support of democratic socialism.”

As the golden rays of his 60th birthday dawned, Mele Kolo Kyari is standing tall on a constellation of stellar achievements. He hit the Biblical three scores on a bull’s eye with news of long dead, abiku refineries becoming ‘born again’.

“Arsenal fans are currently over the moon, testosterone pumping – and why not? The story will not change in 2024… the odds are not in Arsenal’s favour… My forecast is that despite setting his ducks in a row, (Godwin) Obaseki’s candidate would lose in September. His biggest undoing would be the large army of political enemies he has created in the last eight years – some inevitably from the reforms he introduced, but others, and in a far larger number, avoidably from his mean-spirited, opportunistic politics.”

How many people know the difference between another year and a new year? When, on the eve of a new year we shout “Happy New Year!”, how many have an understanding whether the new year they are ushering in will be just "another" year or they actually want it to be a “new” year different in many respects from the outgoing year? Someone said the new year, much like birthdays, should be celebrated with all sobriety because they move us closer to the grave! Rather than say “I am a year older today”, we ought to say that we are a year closer to our grave! This must be what scripture means when it admonishes us in Psalm 90:12 : “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom”

It was sometime in the year 2010, I was walking behind the celebrated World Court Jurist Prince Bola Ajibola on our way to the Ogun State Elders’ Forum meeting when the then 76-year-old Judge turned round and exclaimed: “Tola, nkan ti won n pe ni agba yi ‘o gaa o! ’ meaning "old age is a big burden". He had probably thought I was observing how his footsteps were slightly slow and unsteady and "the knots and bolts holding his limbs and legs together were in a state of ageing".

Mele Kyari, a geologist and Group CEO of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has dug his way into the tunnel of history. Within a space of two months, he announced the successful revamp of two refineries. In November 2024, Port Harcourt refinery came on stream. The following month, December, Warri refinery burst back to life. Both are not performing optimally, yet.

Many people think - though erroneously - that Man or Woman of the Year, Person or Personality of the Year is given only to saints; even devils have a right to it, and have many times been so “rewarded” in the past!. The award is usually a recognition of who impacted lives the most, globally or within a geographical location, for good or for bad within the period under review. Who did the most extraordinary things - whether to the people’s acclamation/applause or derision/opprobrium? Who was the most enigmatic, the most controversial and talked-about, again, for good or for bad? Who surprised people the most - in their speeches, actions, and the successes recorded; whose sound bites travelled farther than those of any other person, thus etching a permanent impression on people’s mind and psyche? Emilokan! Make America Great Again! Whose presence/personality, policies (imagined or anticipated) and actions (threatened or real) have impacted or moved people to action more than at any other time in recent history?

It is an acronym that is as classy as it is inspiring. In 1999, just as the Fourth Republic was birthed, the governors of the six states that make up the Niger Delta, got together and set up the BRACED Commission - to create a strong regional economy through economic cooperation and integration, leading to sustainable development and collective benefits for the people of the Region.

So sure of itself, Google boasts that we “Ask anything”; so I asked, “Why do people die?” The answers it gave are as interesting as they are intriguing. Google says “people die for a variety of reasons” and these, according to it, include aging. “The most common cause of death, aging is a natural process that occurs as cells in the body die and are replaced by new ones”
