WHY MINIMUM WAGE IS A BAD IDEA
By Azu Ishiekwene
I’m opposed to minimum wage. And I know I’m saying this at the risk of losing readers. The minimum wage hurts the poor and vulnerable in whose name and interest Labour claims to strike.

It made a lot of sense that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu chose to mark, not celebrate, his first year in office. Celebration would have been termed insensitive by many, and the president would have been charged for profligacy and extravagance. Which serious or sane leader celebrates when the people he leads are in great and excruciating pains?

“So, what do I get for my labour and when?”
That was often the next question by the hitherto “public-spirited” contributor who, after getting published twice or thrice, had apparently started to bask in sudden “fame.” S/he would become less shy

DO not allow the headline distract you. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Jagaban Borgu, has done so well that we are hungry for more sterling performances hinged on making Nigeria the best country on earth.

This write-up is not new. It was first published on January 18, 2021. Considering his recent court case, I find it relevant to republish it today.

It is a puzzle that the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration has dragged the 36 state governments to court to compel them to respect the autonomy of the 774 local governments, often touted, though erroneously, as the third tier of government and the government that is closest to the grassroots. That Tinubu has seemingly chosen the path of strengthening the existing Nigerian political structure or system contrary to the avalanche of cries for restructuring will baffle many.

Let me wager that all the true Omoluabi's are in retreat right now. The ‘real' ones never joined the Tinubu train ab initio, anyway. The borderline ones who would give Bola Tinubu a chance, hoping to see whether just maybe there’s something they missed, are completely disillusioned now, after only one year.
By Tunde Rahman
But for the ministerial presentations on the achievements of the President Bola Tinubu administration in its first year, christened Ministerial Sectoral Update, which began on Tuesday May 21 at the National Press Centre in Abuja, many may not have known or appreciated the quantum of work that has been done by the government within such a short period of one year in office.

For the deposed Kano Emir, Aminu Bayero, it was not a matter of if but when. The moment the Supreme Court upheld Governor Abba Yusuf's election in January, Bayero knew the governor would need the throne to pay his debt.

Every child loves cartoons. If you have a child who exhibits an intentional allergy to that rich, compelling childhood menu, then you must quickly consider psychiatric help for him.

Last week here in this column (TREASURES column, published in the New Telegraph newspaper of Wednesday, 22 May, 2024), we warned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to beware because Ondo State people were unhappy with the measly offering he offered them as per his Board appointments. The state and its people, who supported the president handsomely in the February 25, 2023 presidential election, got one of the least number of appointments - 6 out of the 550 positions on offer. As if adding salt to injury, states that contributed far less to Tinubu’s presidential victory got greater compensation than Ondo State and its people.

On June 13, 2024 when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu issued a proclamation announcing the commencement of the legislative activities of the 10th Senate, Senator Lawal Adamu Usman, fondly called Mr. LA by his supporters and admirers, officially assumed office as the Senator representing the good people of Kaduna Central Senatorial District of Kaduna State. But long before that day, Adamu now popularly referred to as Senator LA, had hit the ground running. The moment his victory was announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following his shocking defeat of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Muhammad Abdullahi, by a landslide, Senator LA began moves to consolidate his earlier groundwork on the needs of his constituents in the Kaduna Central Senatorial District.
