The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has engaged journalists on the best way to report issues relating to the child poverty which is becoming alarming in the society, especially in the North East region of the county.
The Communications Officer, UNICEF Bauchi Field Office, Opeyemi Olagunju, said the ultimate goal of the media dialogue training was to equip the journalists with the current situation and angles on how best to go about reporting issues relating to child poverty at their respective states.
He Added that the retreat will also profer best solutions on how to reduce the rate as well as improve on ways towards addressing children poverty and building brighter future for the upcoming generations.
Also speaking, the UNICEF social specialist, Ayuba Yusuf, identified lack of child poverty knowledge as well as poor enrollment of the right vulnerable groups under the social protection policy (SPP) programmes was the major obstacles.
Corroborating this pisition, a University Don, Dan kumo, linked the cause of child poverty to unemployment, low wages, conflicts, climate related disaster, inadequate social safety nets and investment in SPP, insufficient access to education and health care, as well as government policies and bad governance respectively.
In their separate remarks, the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Gombe State Alhaji Salihu Baba Alkali and a Permanent Secretary in Adamawa state, Amos Enock Piribu, assured of their governments readiness in supporting to champion the cause towards reduction of the menace at their respective states.
The 35 journalists were drawn form both print and electronic media in Adamawa, Bauchi and Gombe states. NNL.
