Prominent Islamic scholars and Christian leaders in Bauchi State have warned that false allegations of terrorism financing against the state government could threaten the fragile peace and unity enjoyed by residents.
The religious leaders, speaking through separate but converging statements on Friday, stressed that Bauchi State remains one of the most peaceful states in Northern Nigeria.
Iman Abdulrahman Ibrahim Idris who led the delegation of the Islamic scholars during a press briefing with journalists noted that the absence of terrorist enclaves or bandit hideouts in the state has encouraged displaced persons from neighbouring states to resettle in Bauchi, leading to the creation of new communities.
They commended Governor Bala Mohammed for his proactive approach to security, including logistical support for security agencies and continuous engagement with religious leaders through prayers for peace.
On its part, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) said the allegations against the governor and the Commissioner of Finance contradict the governor’s long-standing commitment to interfaith harmony and peaceful coexistence.
CAN Chairman, Rev. Dr. Abraham Damina Dimeus, and Secretary, Rev. Matthew Wakili Laslimbo, highlighted the governor’s consistent support for Christian institutions and programmes, describing him as a leader who promotes unity rather than division.
Both Islamic and Christian leaders called on political actors to avoid exploiting sensitive security issues for political gains, warning that conflict, once ignited, spares no one.
They described the claims as an attempt to tarnish the image of the governor, reaffirming their confidence in his leadership and dedication to peace, security and development.
They urged citizens to remain calm, law-abiding and focused on preserving peace in the state. NNL.
