Concerns over press freedom have intensified in Bauchi State following an alleged assault on a journalist by police officers during the Sallah festivities in Bununu, Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area.

The Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), described the incident as a “gross violation of human rights” and a direct attack on media practitioners.

In a strongly worded statementin issued by its Secretary Isah Garba Gadau Monday in Bauchi, the union criticised what it called a “disgraceful display of lawlessness” by officers expected to protect citizens.

The NUJ urged the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, to ensure a thorough investigation and accountability.

The union further insisted that the police command must cover all medical costs incurred by the victim, stressing that journalists must be allowed to operate without fear of intimidation or violence.

The development has renewed calls for greater accountability among security agencies and protection for media professionals. NNL.
