  • COVID-19: New iPhone 12 or 12 Pro users might need to re-enable contact tracing

    • Another Iphone 12 issue that needs to be resolved.

By Chinua Okafor(Click to follow me)

Say you just got either the new Iphone 12 or Iphone 12 pro I know you feel so excited right? that new phone feeling, but getting a new smartphone can turn out to be lots of work because you now have to spend a frustrating amount of time tweaking settings, permissions and notifications for all your apps. Yes, we know cloud backups are supposed to shorten this process but it doesn’t always record everything, for example, you’ll surely need to double-check that your device’s COVID-19 exposure notifications are still enabled on your new iPhone 12 if you restored from a previous backup. Because they might not be, according to BBC News.

So if you think yours might be affected, you can re-enable exposure notifications in iOS by doing this

    Tap the Settings app

    select Exposure Notifications

clicking “Turn On Exposure Notifications. “and your good to go.

Some users first encountered problems with the official National Health Service (NHS) contact tracing app in the UK. This happened when some iPhone 12 and 12 Pro users attempted to use the app after restoring a previous iPhone backup, they were gracefully but annoyingly greeted with this error message.NHS app errorUsers were greeted with this error

Even though it was discovered that sometimes deleting and re-downloading the app apparently solved the problem by prompting the users to re-enable COVID-19 exposure notifications — the drawback was that it ended up deleting all the locations the users had previously checked into.

Though it is not clear if this issue is exclusive to iPhone 12 models or if restoring backup even on older devices caused this also, — so we suspect the issue might be at a system level rather than with specific apps like NHS.

The exposure notification system was originally announced in April and uses your phone’s Bluetooth to let you know if you’ve come in contact with someone who’s tested positive for COVID-19. If there is any notification it will refer you to up-to-date COVID-19 information online and where you can also conveniently schedule a test for yourself.

So I know what you’re thinking “wow Contact tracing can end COVID-19 sooner than we expected” well technically yes and no you see Contact tracing , whether automatic or conducted manually, is not a magic bullet for managing COVID-19 bursts. But it is one of many steps, together with a robust and available testing program, that can help you find out if you’ve been infected sooner so that you don’t contribute to the spread.

So don’t skimp on Re-enabling these notifications seriously do it now if you can, as this can go a long way – along with the use of face masks and washing your hands regularly to keep you and your family safe from COVID-19.
