The sultan of Sokoto, Dr Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, has expressed concern over the killings of innocent farmers by Armed Boko Haram insurgents in Borno state.

The Sultan made the comments during the first National summit on Date planting in Dange, Sokoto state. He said what happened in Maiduguri was inhuman and barbaric .

He explained that traditional rulers in the country would continue to advise Government on the need to protect the lives and property of the citizenry.

The Sultan further described the wanton slaughter of farmers as a challenge to the nations food security. He called on security agencies to join hands together to find a lasting solution to the security challenge facing the country.

The Sultan who was a guest of honour at the Date summit however called on the partners to the program to remain committed in the implementation and execution of the noble objective.

The Date palm is said to be planted in 300 hectares allocated by the Sokoto State Government.

The chairman of the Sokoto State Zakkat and endowment commission, Malam Lawal Maidoki, thanked the association for choosing Sokoto as venue for the launching, saying that the state has the second largest Date farm in Nigeria.

He stated that in the next five years, Sokoto State would start producing date in commercial quantity as the Date palm to be planted is of High breed which starts yielding in four years time. NNL.
