A ground-breaking oxygen plant in Azare, Bauchi State, has dramatically reduced child mortality rates by over 70 percent, offering new hope to families in seven local government areas.
The plant, located at the General Hospital Azare, has been a game-changer in the healthcare landscape of Bauchi North, serving over 70 percent of the population.
According to Dr. Sambo Alkali, the state government's commitment to expanding healthcare services has yielded remarkable results. "Based on the approximate data being received from the facility, it is evident that there has been a significant reduction in children's deaths as a result of the oxygen plant," Dr. Sambo said during a facility tour for journalists.
According to him said the state government plans to extend the oxygen plant's services to nearby secondary general hospitals in Gamawa, Zaki, Itas/Gadau, Jama'are, Giade, and Shira LGAs. Dr.
Sambo emphasized the government's dedication to ensuring the plant's sustainability, revealing plans to train local staff to maintain the facility and introduce a small service charge for patients to cover upkeep costs.
Dr. Bello Idris, Medical Officer at the General Hospital Azare, highlighted the importance of oxygen therapy in treating respiratory diseases, particularly among children and the elderly. "Before the construction of the oxygen plant, patients were often referred to other centers with oxygen facilities, but now all patients with oxygen therapy needs are attended to promptly," he said.
The oxygen plant's impact is undeniable. According to Dr. David Audu, UNICEF Bauchi Field Officer, the plant has been life-saving for neonates and mothers, opening up new opportunities for the entire Bauchi State.
He said that plans are underway to upgrade the plant with solar power to ensure uninterrupted power supply.
Dr Audu said "this remarkable achievement is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the Bauchi State Government, UNICEF, IHS, and the Canadian government. As the oxygen plant continues to transform healthcare in Bauchi North, its impact will undoubtedly be felt for generations to come". NNL.
