By Olumide Ogunshola
A Professor of Microbiology at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Prof. Folashade Ogunshola, has emerged as new Vice Chancellor of the 60-year old institution.
Ogunshola who succeeds the out-going Vice Chancellor, Prof. Toyin Ogunbiyi, has become the first-ever female VC to be produce by the University since the history of the school. The incumbent, Prof Ogunbiyi, would be finishing his tenure as Unilag's Vice Chancellor in November this year.
The new VC, Shade Ogunshola, was a Provost of the College of Medicine and a former Deputy Vice Chancellor of the institution who had served as Acting VC when Prof Ogunbiyi was temporarily removed following the internal crisis in the University in 2020. The Federal Government, after official investigation of the incident, however doused the tension by immediately reinstating the embattled Ogunbiyi.
Chairman of the Governing Council of the University, Senator Lanre Tejuosho, a former Senate Committee Chairman on Health, had assured before now, that a new Vice Chancellor for the University of Lagos would emerge via a credible and transparent nomination process.
A top academic member of the University who prefers anonymity however commended the appointment of Prof Shade Ogunshola as new VC, describing the historic development as a good omen for the institution. The faculty member therefore urged the new Vice Chancellor to strive to justify her appointment by embarking on strategic reform measures that would launch the institution on further progressive path.
The University of Lagos popularly referred to as the 'Centre of Excellence' of learning in Nigeria, will be celebrating it's 60th anniversary soon, having been established in 1962 as one of the first generation of Nigerian Universities during the first republic administration of Nigeria's former Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.
