Despite admitting that the very fabric of the nation's unity has never been threatened like now, Sokoto State governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has stressed that Nigeria is better as one indivisible country.
Tambuwal who spoke on Tuesday at the Sokoto Government House while receiving members of the Governing Board of the National Youths Service Scheme (NYSC), appealed to all Nigerians to be optimistic that Nigeria can still work and become great.
"Let us realize that Nigeria can work. So many countries doing well today have had their own challenges. Therefore, let's be optimistic that Nigeria will overcome its present challenges".
Referring to how important the NYSC is in promoting national unity, governor Tambuwal admonishes all Nigerians to work for its sustenance.
And to continue to achieve this unity, Tambuwal urged parents to look beyond the security challenges of the moment and allow their children, through the NYSC, to interface with each other.
"We must allow our children to visit other parts of the country to know the people of another region, interact with them, make friends and unite against forces of division", Tambuwal advised.
While re-echoing the fact that Sokoto is one State that has been consistent in its payment of monthly stipends of 5000 to corps members and 50,000 to those from the medical fields, Tambuwal also hinted that the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar 111, has been doing very well for Nigeria and the NYSC.
Speaking earlier, the NYSC Governing Council Chairperson, Hajiya Amb Fatima Bala Abubakar, told governor Tambuwal that the Board came to say a special thank you to the Sultan and the people of the state for being accommodating.
Amb Fatima Bala who commended the Sokoto State government for having a befitting NYSC orientation camp with adequate water supply and electricity, however, appealed for immediate interventions in some of the facilities in the camp.
Amongst the things she pleaded with the governor for intervention included, re-roofing of the multipurpose hall, provision of about 1,500 plastic chairs, re-roofing of one of the hostels that house about 300 corps members, expansion of the pavilion, construction of dining area, as well as replacement of the old ambulance in the camp.
"These are our requests and I am pleading that despite the problem of funding across the federation, you should kindly help us and see how best you can address them".
Those in the entourage of Amb Fatima Bala Abubakar include the DG of NYSC, Brig-Gen Shuaibu Ibrahim, Hajiya Binta Muazu, Prince Oyekunke Oyewumi, South West, Yusuf Umar Nalado, Malam Muhtar Bello, Mr. George Ikole and State Coordinator, Alhaji Muhammad Nakamba, and other members of the NYSC Board.
