No fewer than 56 people have been confirmed dead, since the outbreak of Gastroenteritis in Sokoto State, Dr Muhammad Ali Inname confirmed.
Dr Inname who is the Sokoto State Commissioner for Health gave this update while briefing newsmen after the State Executive Council meeting on Thursday, August 19, 2021..
He stressed that the Gastroenteritis affected 22 out of the 23 local government areas of the State, list the worst-hit LGAs to include, Dange Shuni , Illela, Gwadabawa and Bodinga.
He further divulged that the Tambuwal led government has procured drugs worth millions of naira and distributed same to all the 23 local government areas of the State to help prevent and control the health threat.
Listing other measures taken to curtail further spread of the disease, Dr Inname said, governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has directed all the 23 local government councils chairmen to be holding stakeholders meeting to sensitize their people on preventive measures.
"These council chairmen have also been directed to ensure daily monitoring and supervision of their domain and report back to the state government for prompt action. This is in addition to the call on members of the public to clean their environment and ensure self hygiene culture at all times".
On her part, the Sokoto State Commissioner for Science and Technical Education, Dr Kulu Haruna, said the council has considered and approved the purchase of 2,500 double space beds and 5,000 mattresses at the cost of N437.5 million to be distributed to the science schools across the state
Speaking in the same vein, the Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Bashir Garba, said the council has considered and approved a law establishing the new Shehu Shagari University of Education.
Prof Garba who recalled that the council had constituted a committee of experts to advice it on the feasibility of establishing the University, noted that they have received their report long ago, hence, the approval of the law establishing the University as required by the established procedure of the National University Commission (NUC).
