Moves to build a formidable opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections gained momentum on Monday, as Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, confirmed ongoing talks that may see him align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Receiving a high-powered ADC delegation led by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, the governor said the decision to seek a new political platform was driven by the need to secure a viable future for his supporters.

He said reconciliation efforts within his current party had collapsed, forcing him to explore broader alliances within the opposition.

“We believe elections are won at the grassroots, and we are prepared to mobilise our people accordingly,” Mohammed said.

The ADC delegation disclosed that their mission, backed by former Senate President David Mark, was part of a wider strategy to unite credible political actors across the country.

Lawal warned that failure of opposition forces to unite could have dire consequences for Nigeria, citing economic hardship, insecurity and governance concerns.

He expressed optimism that bringing figures like Mohammed into the ADC fold would strengthen efforts to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Stakeholders at the meeting described the talks as “fruitful,” expressing hope that ongoing negotiations would culminate in a formal announcement in the coming days. NNL.
